Gentle Movement

‘Small movements’ can bring big changes to maintaining better mobility and lifestyle independence. For clients who are recovering from illness, an injury or just finding it difficult to get moving in the morning, this exercise group will be of benefit. The group also learns ways of loosening up limbs which make daily tasks easier.

Meditation

Meditation has been used throughout the millennia in many cultures, in some form or another, to achieve healing and improve mental and physical wellbeing. There are many varied techniques that may be used to help participants reach a peaceful state of thought-free awareness, for example silent visualisation and positive affirmations. Meditation promotes healing through deep relaxation and positive thought. Meditation is suitable for anyone affected by cancer, whether a patient of not.

Pilates

Pilates is a form of exercise that uses small controlled movements with an emphasis on core stability to strengthen and tone the body. Pilates can help re-educate the body, promoting flexibility, postural alignments and musculoskeletal balance. It can help relieve stress and tension whilst providing physical fitness and a sense of wellbeing.

Post Breast Surgery Exercise Group

It is vital that regular arm exercises are performed soon after breast surgery to maintain joint flexibility, muscle strength and decrease scarring. Patients can feel some pain due to the wound or bruising. Neck and shoulder discomfort is also common due to muscle tensing to protect the wound. Exercise helps to reduce this. Exercises are just as important during, as well as after, radiotherapy which can also cause tightening of the shoulder.

This new group, led by our Chartered Physiotherapist, aims to provide guidance with these exercises, advice where they may be too difficult, and options for progression when they have become too easy.

The group is suitable at any stage after discharge.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi, as it is practised in the West today, can perhaps best be thought of as a moving form of yoga and meditation combined. There are a number of forms that consist of a seq uence of slow, graceful movements with even transitions between them. Tai Chi is a popular activity suitable for everyone and is a form of exercise that promotes a feeling of wellbeing.

Yoga Stretching and Relaxation

This specially designed class offers participants an opportunity to benefit from yoga stretching and deep relaxation. This activity helps to relieve some of the stress and anxiety of illness, calming and focussing the mind.

The stretching is always undertaken gently, in a natural manner – ‘Not strong, not complicated’ is the adage in classical yoga. This activity is an excellent way to replenish physical and mental energies.
