More than 100 golfers were moved hearing from Chai client, Robert Geismar who gave a heartfelt speech detailing his cancer journey at Chai’s biennial Golf Fore Chai Day at Hartsbourne Country Club.

He said: “Just over 3 years ago, out of the blue, I was diagnosed with non-smokers lung cancer. It was a terrible shock and I had no prior symptoms. Within 10 days I had half of one lung removed and over the following few months I had courses of Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy. By August 2015 the cancer had spread to my brain and I was put into Palliative Care. I was recommended to come to Chai and I was assessed in September 2015. It was absolutely amazing, the wonderful benefits and treatments that I received in my own home. I really felt valued and supported. The Home Support Service benefited not only myself, but also my wife. Cancer is totally unpredictable and having Chai behind me was vital.

In February last year, I was offered a miracle immunotherapy drug which has worked wonders for me. After 6 months the cancer has disappeared which is an incredible relief. Throughout my cancer experience, Chai has been amazingly supportive to myself and my family.”

The event, hosted by Golf Fore Chai Committee members; Jo Fogel, Mel Rom, Carolyn Joels and Meryl Rosenberg, raised over £60,000 for Chai’s Home Support Service.

A shotgun start kicked off the round of golf in the sunshine. Following the golf tournament, guests were welcomed by Jo Fogel, Chairman of the Golf Fore Chai Committee who presented awards to the winning team.

The winning team comprised of Ben Doltis, Jeremy Doltis, Jason Harris and Zac Harris. Yvonne Allardice and Ben Doltis won trophies for the Longest Drive and Michele Massing and Neil Miller won the Nearest to the Pin award.

Following the event Jo Fogel, Chairman of the Golf Fore Chai Committee, said: “We smashed it! Over £60,000 was raised towards Chai’s Home Support Service. I am completely overwhelmed by the amount we made. This couldn’t have been done without the dedication and hard work of our small but wonderful committee, our ever generous sponsor the EFR Travel Group and to all the players and donors who continue to support us and enabled us to make this day a resounding success!”

Chai’s Chairman, Louise Hager said: “We are so touched to have the loyal support once again of the Golf Fore Chai Committee and we are so grateful for their continued commitment and dedication. The Golf Fore Chai Committee have raised the incredible amount of over £200,000 over the last eight years, which has helped ensure that Chai can continue to provide its specialised services and cater to all those in our community affected by a cancer diagnosis.”
