Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)Lymphoedema is swelling in the tissues beneath the skin which occurs when lymph cannot drain away. Lymphoedema may develop after surgery or radiotherapy to treat cancer. Although Lymphoedema may develop in any part of the body, it often presents in a limb. It may occur immediately after treatment or many years later as a result of infection or trauma. Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a very special type of massage designed to stimulate the lymphatic system. It is carried out by a qualified Lymphoedema therapist. The first visit will include a consultation and our Lymphoedema therapist will outline the number and frequency of sessions. Alongside the massage the affected area may be bandaged to help reduce the swelling. Clients will be given advice on home care and will be measured for a compression garment if appropriate.
